I have had my share of various audio components over the last 25 years and I can say that from a price point that the Boston HPS 12HO is one of the best. From a pure Subwoofer standpoint I have had Subs from Infiniti,Wharfdale,Velodyne, and JBL. Heck I've been buying Loudspeakers before dedicated subs were around like Advents,Cerwin Vega and of course Boston Acoustics A-60 SERIES II that I still have from 1986. These subwoofers however play loud, clean and are pretty tight concidering that they are of a ported design which I will probably contribute to its internal bass management circuitry. I actually have 2 of them for my home theater set-up. I have 2 gripes though, there is a very light hum that can be heard only when putting your ear inches from the driver itself which is most likely from the amplifier itself. Second how the hell do you lean the cabinet with this type of coating? That's my only gripe these subs are strong, solid performers. Good Job Boston.

Great for Movies, Good for Music,

The Boston HPS12 is a High Output 300 watt RMS sub, tested at 30,50, and 80hz at 4 ohms with no more than 1 percent distortion at full power.
Powered by a class D amp the Boston draws 600 watts of power from your wall socket. Its dynamic peak must therefore be between about 450 and 600? Boston doesn't seem to 'test' this anymore. Competitors Polk, Klipsch and JBL, Velodyne, etc. do!
A well built sub. It is well-braced. Rapping on it produces little resonance. The bass port is on the rear and is oblong rather than round--it curves upward into the sub and is similar to the port on the Horizon tower speakers.
Capable of reaching down to 25hz the sub is an excellent Movie performer once 'properly' set up. It can compete with most subs in this price range and only falls short when compared to higher end subs by Velodyne, SVS, and Hsu, etc. Deep channel bass gives a good oomph to LFE (effects). Plenty of power for a small to larger medium room.
Being a 12" it is OK with music but has to be tuned down when playing music as it tends to be a bit heavy. As many of you know smaller sub cones are a bit faster with music. The Boston HPS12 is a pretty good compromise between Movie and Music. But better for film.
It is, though, possible to overdrive the sub even though it has protection circuits for this. Best when volume is set to 1 o'clock or less.
Placement is important. Not too close to the back wall, needs a little room to breath.
I'd give it a 4.5 if that were available.

i bought this sub on the advice and reputation of BA, and it was a huge mistake. for having a 12" woofer and 300watts RMS this hunk of junk is terrible! my tiny surrounds give off more bass than this junker of a sub. i have mine hooked up to a denon 1508 with monster sub cable hooked up to it, and its terrible...the bass on music cds/tv is virtually non-existant, and on dvds its barely noticable.... i am immensely disappointed with this sub and im stuck with it because i dont have the money it takes to ship it back to where i bought it... total false advertising on this sub, please take my advice and DONT BUY THIS SUB!!! i got it on sale, and now i know why it was on sale. this is the worst sub i have ever owned and i will never purchase another item from BA...sorry if this message gets deleted, but this sub is that poor!!!!
